AMA misleads on homebirth death figures: Interview w AMA Pres + Home Birth Australia Sec

(download)

The Australian Medical Association has recently published a journal article claiming a seven-fold increase in risk of death for children born at home. The Hoyden About Town blog published an article explaining how talking about the seven-fold increase was misleading, as it involved only nine deaths over a thousand planned homebirths in fifteen years. The study only identifies three deaths that may have been prevented if different care was chosen. However in a media release, the AMA only mentions the seven-fold increase in risk, without putting that figure in context.

The figures in the AMA's media release have been reported without challenge by media outlets including the ABC, Courier-Mail and the Sydney Morning Herald.

The audio story in this article includes a summary of the issue, and interviews with AMA President Dr Andrew Pesce and Home Birth Australia Secretary Justine Caines.

Tipan Tapan and Aloo Ping at Tibetan Kitchen, Petrie Terrace

$28 for these plus a glass of mango lassi. The smaller dish is the tipan tapan, and the other dish with the small bread rolls that look sort of like beehives is the aloo. Quite nice, worth going back to I think. Tibetan Kitchen has a pretty large vegetarian menu too.

There's a review at http://diningrendezvous.blogspot.com/2009/07/tibetan-kitchen-216-petrie-terrace.html
